The Mental Glymphatic System: How to Flush "Cognitive Sewage"
Your brain isn't just tired; it is congested. How to use Stoic filtering to clear the noise before you sleep.
We treat our minds like infinite hard drives. We think we can just keep downloading information - news, emails, podcasts, opinions—without ever running out of space.
But then 10:00 PM arrives. You lie down to sleep. And suddenly, your brain starts looping.
It replays a conversation from three years ago. It worries about an email you need to send tomorrow. It hums with the static of the day.
You aren’t suffering from insomnia. You are suffering from Cognitive Constipation.
You have consumed more “impressions” than you have processed.
Just as the body produces physical waste, the mind produces “Cognitive Sewage.” If you don’t have a system to flush it, it backs up. The result is anxiety.
The Stoic Filter: Prosochē
The Stoics didn’t have iPhones, but they had the Forum. They were bombarded with gossip, politics, and noise.
Marcus Aurelius, the Emperor of Rome, had every reason to be overwhelmed. Yet, he wrote extensively about the discipline of “Discarding.”
He asked himself a simple question about every piece of information that tried to enter his mind:
“Is this necessary?”
He treated his attention like a fortress. He didn’t let things in just because they knocked on the door.
Today, we open the door for everyone. We let the news cycle, the angry tweet, and the work Slack live rent-free in our “Inner Citadel.”
The Modern Protocol: The Evening Flush
To sleep well, you need to empty the cache. Here is the 3-Step Stoic Protocol to do it tonight.
1. The “View from Above” (Perspective)
When you are worried about a specific problem (e.g., a presentation), zoom out. Visualize yourself from the ceiling. Then from the sky. Then from space.
Marcus used this to remind himself how small his problems were in the span of eternity.
The Action: Close your eyes for 60 seconds. See your house from space. Realize the email that is stressing you out is invisible from that height.
2. The “Brain Dump” (Externalization)
Seneca wrote about examining his day every evening. “I hide nothing from myself.”
Your brain loops on tasks because it is afraid of forgetting them.
The Action: Take a physical piece of paper. Write down every “Open Loop” (tasks, worries) in your head.
The Logic: Once it is on paper, your brain knows it is safe. It can stop spending energy “holding” it.
3. The “Control” Sort
Look at your list. Mark each item with a C (Control) or NC (No Control).
My preparation for the meeting = Control.
What my boss thinks of me = No Control.
The Action: Physically cross out the NC items. You have done what you can. The rest is fate.
To End:
You wouldn’t go to sleep without brushing your teeth.
Stop going to sleep without brushing your mind.
Flush the sewage. Protect the citadel.

The Bridge (Mind vs. Body):
We have discussed how to clear the mental waste. But your brain has physical waste (amyloid plaque) that needs to be washed away, too.

You have two sewage systems. Are they working?
1. The Physical: The Glymphatic System washes toxins from your brain at night.
2. The Mental: The Stoic "Prosochē" filters noise from your mind during the day.
Most people have clogged both.
They wake up foggy (Physical Waste) and anxious (Mental Waste).
Today, across both my newsletters, I am teaching you how to pull the plug and flush the system.
